Learning to Recognize the Work of His Spirit. By Ellen White
Those whom Jesus commends at the judgment [for heaven] may have little knowledge of theology, but they hold fast to Jesus’ principles. Through the influence of the Holy Spirit, they have become a blessing to those around them. Even among the Gentiles, there are people who have cultivated a spirit of kindness. Even before the words of life reached their ears, they helped the missionaries and served them even at the risk of their own lives.
God’s Voice in Nature
Among the nations, there are people who serve God without knowing it. No one has ever brought them the light. Yet they will not be lost. They are not familiar with God’s written law. But they hear His voice in nature and do what the law requires. Their works are proof that the Holy Spirit has touched their hearts, and they are recognized as God’s children.
Surprise!
How surprised and delighted will the humble among the nations and among the Gentiles be when they hear these words from the Savior’s lips: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these my brothers, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40) How joyful, too, will be the heart of “Infinite Love” when her followers, surprised and delighted by her words of appreciation, look up to her.
They may not know Jesus by name—and yet!
Wherever someone feels the impulse to love and empathize, wherever the heart reaches out to bless and uplift others, there it is evident that God’s Holy Spirit is at work. People living in the deepest paganism, who have never heard of God’s written law and do not even know the name of Jesus, are kind to His servants and protect them at the risk of their own lives. Their actions reveal the work of a divine power. The Holy Spirit has placed Jesus’ virtue in the heart of the “savage,” awakening his sympathies contrary to his nature and upbringing. The “light that enlightens every person coming into this world” (John 1:9) shines into his heart and will guide his steps into God’s kingdom if he takes it to heart.
Baal’s Silent Opponents and Unwitting Worshipers
Not all people in this world are lawless and sinful. Not all have sided with the enemy. God has many thousands who have not bowed their knees to Baal, many who long to learn more about Jesus and the Law, many who, against all hope, hope that Jesus will come soon to end the reign of sin and death. There are also many who worship Baal without knowing it. Yet God’s Spirit is still reaching out to them. These people need the personal help of those who have come to know God and the power of His Word.
In Search of Longing
In this day and age, every child of God is called to actively serve others. When people who understand biblical truth set out in search of men and women who long for knowledge, God’s angels will stand by their side. One can visit the places where angels go without fear. As a result of the faithful efforts of consecrated workers, many will turn from idolatry to the worship of the living God. Many will no longer pay homage to man-made institutions but will fearlessly take the side of God and His law.
