Protestants view the Roman Catholic Church more positively today than they did in the past, which is increasingly blurring the differences between the two denominations. While freedom of conscience was once highly valued, there is now a move toward Rome without questioning its unchanging claims to infallibility and power. The Church continues to hold fast to its principles and would, given the opportunity, once again engage in persecution and tyranny. Especially in the United States, the danger that Catholicism could restrict religious freedom is underestimated. Nevertheless, there are many sincere believers within the Church who, once they recognize the truth, will find their way to God’s people.
