We turn our attention to the prophet Elijah.

Was his path easy?

No.

The Holy Scriptures show us a man of God who lived in a difficult time. The people of Israel had fallen away from the faith and turned to idolatry. Elijah stood in the midst of this spiritual darkness – seemingly alone, unyielding and full of zeal for the Lord.

Elijah – a prophet in a time of apostasy

Israel had left the covenant. Under King Ahab and the pagan Jezebel, Baal worship had become the state religion. The prophets of the Lord were persecuted and killed. Elijah confronted this apostasy – not quietly, but with clarity, authority and courage.

He was a man of action. A man of battle. A man who stood for the truth, even when he stood alone.

Mount Carmel – Revelation of the truth

On Mount Carmel, Elijah gathered the people of Israel and confronted the prophets of Baal. Two sacrifices were prepared. The priests of Baal cried out to their god – but nothing happened. No fire. No answer. No life.

Then Elijah came before the Lord. In answer to his prayer, fire fell from heaven. The sacrifice was consumed. The truth was revealed. God alone is God.

The prophets of Baal were judged. Israel was shaken. Many turned back.

After the victory comes the threat

But the spiritual victory did not immediately lead to peace. King Ahab told his wife Jezebel what had happened. And she swore to kill Elijah.

When Elijah heard about this, fear came over him. The great prophet fled. He went into the desert, lay down and wished to die.

The warrior was exhausted. His zeal was burnt out. Loneliness overwhelmed him.

God’s care in weakness

But God did not leave him alone.

An angel came to him and spoke:

“Arise, eat and drink.”

Elijah ate and drank – and fell asleep again.

The angel came a second time:

“Get up, eat and drink. The journey is too far for you.”

God still had a task for him.

Strengthened, Elijah set off on his journey – forty days and forty nights to Horeb.

The encounter with God in the cave

Elijah found a cave on Mount Horeb. He stayed there. God met him there.

“What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Elijah wailed his heart out:

“I have been zealous for the Lord. Your covenant has been forsaken. Your prophets have been killed. I alone am left – and they seek my life.”

Storm, earthquake and fire – but God is not in them

God asked Elijah to come before him.

A violent storm came – but the Lord was not in the storm.

An earthquake followed – but the Lord was not in the earthquake.

A fire appeared – but the Lord was not in the fire.

Then came a quiet, gentle whisper.

And in it was the Lord.

The quiet gentle whisper – a new lesson

Elijah covered his face.

His restlessness came to rest.

His zeal was purified.

He realized:

God does not only work in the mighty.

Not always in the loud.

Not always in the dramatic.

The quiet influence of the Spirit of God changes hearts more lastingly than any miracle of judgment.

Not power, but the Spirit changes hearts

Not eloquence, not logic, not volume converts the soul.

It is the gentle influence of the Holy Spirit that quietly and surely transforms the character.

Elijah learned:

It is God’s work – not mine.

I am his servant.

The transition – Elijah and Elisha

Elijah knew that his time was coming to an end. God led him to Elisha, his successor.

Shortly before he was taken up to heaven, Elijah asked:

“Ask me to do something for you.”

Elisha replied:

“May a double portion of your spirit come to me.”

The double spirit – from fighter to father

  • Elijah was a fighter against apostasy.
  • Elisha became a spiritual father among the people.
  • Above all, Elijah worked miracles of judgment.
  • Elisha worked healing, provision and salvation.
  • Elisha helped in the small needs of everyday life:
  • In hunger, sickness, loss, need and strangeness.
  • He did not serve alone, but as part of a team.
  • He built up instead of just tearing down.

Not less truth – but more love

The double spirit does not mean less clarity.

It means more patience.

More mercy.

More closeness to people.

God not only wanted to call Israel back –

he wanted to heal it.

Conclusion – God’s work in silence

Elijah was taken up alive into heaven.

But first he learned this lesson:

Not everything that is loud is divine.

And not everything that is silent is weak.
