Welcome to the lecture series “Strong through the cold season” (October to Easter). In this video you will get understandable, purely informative insights into the anatomy of the respiratory tract (nose, sinuses, throat, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs) and learn how your immune system works – from the non-specific defense to the specific defense (B and T cells).
You will also find out why the nose is a real protective system: it filters, cleans, moisturizes and warms the air. Exciting: the nitric oxide (NO) produced in the nose can support oxygen uptake and acts as part of the first line of defense against intruders. Equally important: moist mucous membranes and functioning cilia that transport particles and germs to the outside – which is why drinking enough fluids plays a key role.
We also talk about defense mechanisms in the throat (e.g. tonsils), components such as lysozyme in saliva and signaling substances of the immune system, including interleukins (e.g. fever/immune cell formation) and interferons (communication & antiviral defense).
