The view from below: The raspberry doctrine

While picking berries, I learned that the most valuable qualities of our fellow human beings often only become apparent from a very specific perspective. By Erika Grötzinger

Whenever I pick raspberries in our garden, I realize that the most beautiful fruits often hang in such a way that I can't actually see them. But when I look at the bush from below, I see the most beautiful raspberries that were hidden by the leaves above. 'You have to be pretty humble to pick raspberries', I think to myself every time.

It involuntarily reminded me of the verse: "Let each esteem others better than themselves." (Phil.2,3)

If we want to see the beautiful fruits of our partner, our children, friends or coworkers in the kingdom of God, we must first 'squat down', humble ourselves, look up at them from below so that we can see the strengths and beautiful sides of our fellow human beings.

We see the supposed arrogance of others, the insults, we see the strange views, we see the otherness. But sometimes we don't see the 'gold'. The faithfulness of your brothers and sisters to the Lord, who may not send prayer hands in response to a message, but who regularly raise their hands to God in real life. The love with which they serve God, the punctuality and reliability when it comes to work, the diligence when working overtime, the words they speak without any slander.

Sometimes we find it difficult to see all the good in others because our hearts don't want to see the good.

But if we are willing to humble ourselves and respect others more, then that is the first step in the right direction. But if we do not 'squat down', or rather 'get down on our knees', we will have no chance of seeing the beautiful fruits in our neighbor. Let us ask for humility!
